Choosing Your Speakers

A big decision that must influence what kind of speakers you get are the room that they will go in. Depending on whether you have a big enclosure for your system, just building your house, or maybe just a regular old room setup,

You Will Typically Pick Between :
  • Floor Speakers
  • Bookshelf Speakers
  • Wall Speakers

The short of it is that floor speakers will rest on your floor and typically are bigger than bookshelf and wall speakers. Bookshelf speakers are often the smallest of the three, can be super-tiny but produce big sound and wall speakers, (if you haven't guessed it), are actually installed IN a wall. So which one is right for you? Well if you want decent sound and you don't want to pay too much, go with SpeakersBookshelf speakers. They're definitely good for a variety of purposes and if you don't want to tear down walls putting speakers in, go with these attractive speakers. Again, you can get some great sound out of them and since they can often be really tiny, you can usually hide them within your room. If your home is being constructed now of you feel confident w/ your handy work, wall speakers gave things a very nice look since they actually reside in your walls. While not as pricy as floor speakers they're nice especially if you're installing sound in your entire house, (i.e. intercom, radio, etc). Floor speakers are often the biggest of all in size, price and quality.

Speaker power is usually measured in watts, and average bookshelf speakers, (especially the sub par ones you get out of the "surround sound in a box packages"), are usually about 30-60 watts. And even that will sound average. Getting better is 100 watts, (decent for your run of the mill home theater setups). After that well, it's what you want. Like receivers, most speakers are plugged in at big retailers, and it's usually some big red button you have to push to get sound pumping through the speaker in front of you. Check them out! If you need to ask someone how to listen to the speakers in store, do it. It's worth it. On a final note, if you can't find the wattage of the speakers anywhere, often they can be found on the back of the speaker itself.
