HD Gaming

Gaming today is not what is was years ago with horrible looking images, bad connections to your TV and even worse, mono sound. These days, video games are like many other forms of digital entertainment we enjoy with rich and encompassing video and sound. Most of the console systems, (as opposed to portable systems like Game Boy), support 480p pictures, Dolby Digital and even online gaming through high speed internet connections!

And so the question becomes :
How do you tap into all that power?

Nintendo's GameCube Fortunately for you, that's really an easy question. All of the current consoles, (Sony's PS2 and PS3, Microsoft's XBox and 360 and Nintendo's GameCube and Wii), have accessories that you can buy that will allow them to deliver high quality picture and surround sound. Now even though we just named the GameCube as having the ability to display high quality pictures, that's really a bit of a half truth.

You see, after May in 2004, the Digital A/V Output port was removed from the back on the GameCube because as Nintendo says, "we found that less than one percent of all Nintendo GameCube players used this feature." That honestly is not too surprising since the GameCube is really geared towards younger players, (i.e. those who are most likely not too worried about HD output and such).

Progressive Scan CordBut, if you absolutely need the best picture possible Nintendo says, "If you have a Nintendo GameCube without this port, and you wish to play your games in progressive scan, you may be able to obtain a system that was made prior to the removal of the Digital A/V Output port. Please call our Consumer Service department at 1-800-255-3700 to discuss available options." And there you go. If you do have this particular GameCube, make sure you get the cable you need, shown right.

On a final note, with the cable, the GameCube still doesn't output at a true High Definition resolution, (720p or 1080i/p), but instead something lower at 480p or what is commonly referred to as Progressive Scan. We know we just through a lot at you but this isn't the place for lofty explanations. When you're ready, go to our HD section in our Television Guides!

Now that that's done, let's get on to the real contenders shall we?
First up is Sony's Playstation 2! Will be it have more to offer than the GameCube?
