Nintendo Wii and HD
Last edited : Jan 1, 2007
When the Wii first came out late in 2006, it brought with it a lot of things. Most notably, interactive gameplay and consequently broken remotes and tvs. The question we ask today is, did it also come with great HD capabilities, or does it fall flat like it's GameCube predecessor?
The Nintendo Mindset
While perhaps it's inconsequential for the sake of this writing, it's important to keep in mind that Nintendo is in the business of making things fun. That's to say that above all else, it has strived for years to appeal to the "every gamer", sometimes a market that is left behind today. When you do that though, you worry about how the games play, and how people will play them. What you DON'T worry about is HD.
Look Elsewhere for HD
That's right. With all the cool and exciting things the Wii delivers, Nintendo once again has forgotten about all us home theater fans. Now the argument could be made, "Why should the Wii deliver HD content if all it's games look like cartoons for kids anyway." But that's just not the truth. Plenty of games on the Wii have great graphics and it's just a shame that they won't be seen in a HD format. So Then, What are the Options?
Well...Just like the GameCube, it would seem that Wii owners are not completely out of luck. Once again, it is possible to buy component cables for the system to get a 480p picture, and it is also possible to set the display to a widescreen format. So, not all is lost. ... Here's to hoping that Nintendo's next system will finally embrace HD.Nintendo's GameCube and Wii are basically at a home theater standstill, PS2 has a smattering of games in 480p and XBox 360 has all their games in at least 720p and you can get a HD DVD add-on for it! Until you get a PS3, looks like it's a no brainer.
