When to Buy a Package?

When is the right to buy a package? ...Hm... NEVER! HA HA HA! No, seriously.

What exactly is a "package"?
Well, as it relates to home theater, a package is essentially a pre-arranged home theater system. Still confused? Think of it this way... Up until now, reading through these articles, you have learned how to put together your home theater system right? You have learned how to pick out a receiver and also how to pick out speakers and precisely the criteria to use in doing so. Well a package has a receiver and speakers in a box, almost always made by the same manufacturer.

So what's the problem with that?
Often, the problem is the fact that everything is in a box. Being in a box, you can't often see what's in the box. The real problem though doesn't usually afflict the people reading these artcles...It afflicts the people who don't know anything about home theater. You see many of these people will see the commonly low $300 price tag on a home theater package look down the row to a $300 receiver and say to themselves, "I can either buy a receiver for $300 OR I can buy a receiver, speakers and sub for $300...Easy choice!" What they don't realize is that the speakers are probably sub-par in quality and the receiver is probably the worst of the worst with 3 inputs and them all being composite.

What to do about all this?
Firstly, you don't buy this. You got that? Secondly, you don't let anyone else buy this. When you see people looking at packages, just educate them about the dangers of doing it. It all really comes down to knowledge. If you want to buy a package and you think it's a good deal, get the model numbers of all it's contents. Get home, and look everything up. Then you can figure out if the receiver and speakers are great, or just REEEEEEEELY bad.
