Enough Inputs?
When is enough enough? It really depends on what you want to do I guess. I mean, one input is obviously not enough. Two is usually not going to do it either. Ok, so what makes one and two bad, and 15 perhaps overwhelming? Is there a way to break this down?
Break it Down!
Let's see if we can figure out how many inputs the common person with a home theater system would have to have in order to connect all of his/her components to her/his receiver. Let's start out with the basic connections and work our way up.
Beginner's Setup
- TV/Cable/Sat
- VCR
- DVD
So from there you have three connections. And that's really your basic setup. Now if you're a techno-superfreak, you're probably going to need more connections.
Advanced Setup
- TV/Cable/Sat
- VCR
- DVD
- XBOX
- PS2
- GameCube
That's at least 6 connections, and that's probably pretty good. There are ways to increase your number of connections without having to buy a bigger receiver. Switchers allow you plug multiple devices into it with the switcher having one output to the receiver...lets say on the receiver's VCR in. So if the receiver is set to VCR in, you can switch between the components on the switcher by hitting the corresponding button the switcher.
Of course the final thing you have to consider is the quality of the inputs on your receiver and/or switcher. On the above switcher it is important to notice that it has all kinds of inputs including s-video and Ethernet for high speed gaming! It seems that everyday something new comes out that begs to be connected to your home theater. For that reason, enough is...never enough it seems.
