The Star Wars Test
This isn't anything official, just something that I like to do. And you don't have to be a nerd to be able to appreciate the Star Wars Test ...But it helps.
Any of you who have seen Star Wars knows that it's the quintessential sci-fi effects movie. Of course there have been great sci-fi movies since then, (Independence Day comes to mind), but Star Wars still embodies all that is sci-fi. You have freakin' Chewy walking around, X-Wings flying all over the place and you even have Jar Jar Binks. (Please don't kill me). The point is, with all this cRaZy stuff going on, there's bound to be cRaZy sound effects going along with them!
So what's the Star Wars Test already!?It's the first thing you should do after you think you've correctly connected your Home Theater system. Put in a Star Wars movie, go to a really exciting scene and turn the sound way up. Sure you can go though the receiver's "test mode" to see if all your speakers are connected correctly but you usually just listen to static during that test. With the Star Wars test, you get to hear real life sound!, Just like...Real life!
Which movie should I use for the test?
My pick is any of the first three. Sure, the purists say Episodes IV, V and VI are the best, (and who am I to disagree), but those movies were not originally designed with surround sound in mind, the first three movies were. Episode I, (while having Jar Jar in it), sounds great, favorite test scene has to be the Pod Races. In Episode II you have the gigantic battle at the end of the movie right before Yoda goes nutz. And in the third movie, I would pick the part were Anakin/Darth Vader finds out Padme is dead, and does his best Frankenstein gently cooing, "Nooooooooooooooooo".
Two other reasons to use the Star Wars Test
- SW movies are great to test the different receiver settings you have...You can find out which you like best to deliver your surround
sound. Most receivers have options like "Hall", "Game", "Concert", etc.
- Count Dooku. Don't believe me? Say it then : Count DOOOOOOOOKU Keep doing it. Especially when others first look at you
like you're weird.
